La Condition Publique
La Condition Publique was erected at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce in 1902 to measure the moisture content of wool and cotton in order to establish quality and prices.
Created by the architect Albert Bouvy, the building features a 224-metre façade, upon which alternating plain and enamelled bricks illustrate the attention paid to the building’s décor during its construction. Inside, two vast halls are linked by a covered roadway.
La Condition Publique was listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1998; the project to rehabilitate and transform the site into a “culture factory” was awarded to the architect Pierre Bouchain, who chose to preserve the existing building while creating a modular and flexible space. La Condition Publique is now a venue for artistic creation and diffusion.
